Following the resignation of Mayor Brian Johnson on Friday, July 2, 2021, the Council appointed then-Mayor Pro Tem Linda Rhodes to fill the vacancy in the Mayor's seat during a special meeting on Tuesday, July 13. This resulted in the vacancy of City Council Place 4. Mayor Rhodes and the Council are now accepting applications from qualified persons for consideration of appointment to Place 4. This application will close at 5:00 p.m. Thursday, August 12, 2021. The Council is expected to conduct interviews before making an appointment during their Tuesday, August 17, 2021 Regular Meeting.
Appointments (or special elections) to fill vacancies on the City Council are at the sole discretion of the City Council. The Council is in no way obligated to appoint someone from the pool of applicants. If the Council does, indeed, act to appoint a qualified person to this seat, that Councilmember's term would expire in May of 2022. At that time, the place would then be filled via election by voters. Whoever might be appointed could then choose whether or not to apply for a place on the May 7, 2022 ballot.
If you have questions about this process, please contact Interim City Manager Leslie E. Galloway. Not all fields are required. However, applicants are encouraged to provide complete information. Council reserves the right to remove from consideration any incomplete application.
Please review all eligibility requirements and ensure that your schedule allows for you to attend regular meetings of the Council, which are currently held on the third Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m.
